Andrew Scott and Lily Gladstone's killer performances were snubbed by the BAFTAs

The BAFTA nominations were just released recently, and there were some shocking exclusions!

The British Academy Film Awards announced the 2024 nominees, and both Andrew Scott and Lily Gladstone were among the notable snubs.

Killers of the Flower Moon, expected to take home a slew of trophies this season, was nominated for nine BAFTAs, but Gladstone’s inspired performance as Mollie Burkhart was left off the ballot. Strangely, director Martin Scorsese wasn’t nominated for Best Director either.

Gladstone, who uses she/they pronouns as a way of “decolonizing gender,” became the first Indigenous woman to be nominated and win an acting award at the Golden Globes, making it all the more confusing why she isn’t up for a BAFTA.

“There’s no such thing as expected at BAFTA,” Anna Higgs, chair of BAFTA’s film committee, told Variety after announcing the nominees. “I think to play a guessing game with our expert members and where they can go, particularly in a year that’s so competitive, is really hard.”

Another noticeable exclusion was out gay actor Scott, who starred as main character Adam in Andrew Haigh’s achingly beautiful All of Us Strangers. Paul Mescal —who plays Scott’s lover — has been nominated for Supporting Actor, as has Claire Foy, and Haigh is up for a Best Director award. The film was also nominated for Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay and Casting.

Yes, you read that right; somehow, the film is nominated for its casting choices, but the actor who was cast as the lead was snubbed for his performance.

In another surprising turn of events, Oppenheimer is up for awards, but Barbie was left off the list of Best Picture nominees, and Greta Gerwig didn’t receive a nod for her directing work either, even though the candy-colored feminist film is up for five other awards.
