Happy Trans Day of Visibility, Out readers!
I've been out as a trans woman for 13 years, but this might be the most important Trans Day of Visibility I've ever lived through. With trans people being erased from the media by companies like Disney, trans girls becoming a nationwide target in sports, and our own government attacking and erasing trans lives, it feels like its more dangerous now to be a trans woman than it was a decade ago when I first came out.
But as scary as it is, I also know now that the trans community is bigger, stronger, and more expansive than it ever was before.
This year, I'm finding strength and community knowing that we have always been here and we will always be here. Since the 1950s, trans women have been defining beauty, style and poise in the fashion industry, for decades trans people have been changing and defining culture in this country, even when others try to define us, trans people have been making our own art and films to highlight our community for years.
Even one of the most powerful billionaires in the world can do nothing to stop his own trans daughter from living her best life and making him look like a fool.
So now is the time to keep fighting, to keep supporting trans people everywhere, to help trans kids become their happiest, healthiest selves, to let trans people define their own genders and terminology, to listen to trans people, and to remember that without the T, there is no LGB.
