Karla Sofía Gascón — the breakout star of Emilia Pérez and recent Out100 honoree — has taken to social media to fight against the dangerous anti-trans rhetoric shared by conservatives.

This Tuesday, Gascón shared a statement from Dr. Grace Ann in which she fought back against anti-trans voices who argue that, for example, "there are only two genders." She cites numerous examples in the living world — including the human one — where gender is not so easily split along chromosomes. "Don't use science to justify your bigotry. The world is way too weird for that shit," she concludes.
The actress then shared her own experiences in the Instagram caption, which reads:
"I feel a deep joy to have been born in a society where we have fought for our rights, where we have taken to the streets [as protests] for them [trans rights]. A deep pride in the protection of a justice system that creates laws that defend against hatred and discrimination, that does not question but rather tries to understand its citizens. I am a WOMAN, like everyone else, even if many do not want to accept it. The existence of the human being is full of color. [Thus,] I share with you the brilliant response to transphobia from Dr. Grace Ann."
The full statement from Dr. Ann (above) broke down tons of misinformation about trans people that have been weaponized by conservative agendas.
It should be noted that Gascón doesn't specify which country (or countries) she is referring to. Nonetheless, the timing of this statement does coincide with President Donald Trump's recent statements claiming that "there are only two genders: male and female.
As reported by The Advocate, Trump has also been pushing for government-issued documents (like passports) to show the sex that a U.S. citizen was assigned at birth rather than their gender. This rather trans-exclusionary push also includes the removal of X as a gender marker.
In the meantime, Emilia Pérez has been nominated for 13 accolades at the 2025 Oscars — more than any other project this year.
Emilia Pérez is streaming on Netflix.
