Jon Cryer: Duckie Wasn't Gay

The 'Two and Half Men' actor responds to Molly Ringwald's claim that his fictional character would have come out by now.

Molly Ringwald, who was included in our Hot List in our June/July issue, spoke to us about John Hughes and clarified that she thought that he had written a gay character in just about every movie he made -- even if he never came right out and said so. And, well, she kinda "outed" Duckie from Pretty in Pink: "Duckie doesn't know he's gay," she told us. "I think he loves Andie in the way that [my gay best friend] always loved me. That [original ending, which had them together] fell so flat -- it bombed at all the screenings. I didn't realize it then -- I just knew that my character shouldn't end up with him, because we didn't have that sort of chemistry. If John was here now, and I could talk to him, I think that he would completely acknowledge that."

Well that didn't necessarily sit too well with Jon Cryer, who currently stars opposite Ashton Kutcher on Two and a Half Men, about his iconic fictional character.

He told Zap2It, "I respectfully disagree. I want to stand up for all the slightly effeminate dorks that are actually heterosexual. Just cause the gaydar is going off, doesn't mean your instruments aren't faulty. I've had to live with that, and that's OK."

While they were at it, they also asked Cryer about Molly Ringwald tweeting she was Team James Spader. "I tweeted her back," he says. "It's funny actually. I mean, come on! We're both on Twitter, something's got to happen there. But no, she assured me privately via Twitter," he laughs, "that she was truly into Duckie. She said that instead of being Team Duckie or Team Blaine, she was actually Team Spader. I think we're all team Jimmy Spader at this point. I don't blame her."

So what did we learn here? High school rivalries never die.
