After last year’s criticism for all-white nominees at the Oscars, the Academy welcomes 683 new members with an emphasis on racial and gender diversity.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences took last year's #OscarsSoWhite to heart when choosing the 2016 class of members.

The organization added 683 new names among those who will choose this year's award winners--a 53 percent increase in new members from last year's class of 322.

Among the new members, 46 percent are female and 41 percent are people of color. Overall, however, the numbers are still pretty low, with total representation counting 27 percent for women and only 11 percent for people of color.

Notably among the new members are the openly gay director Xavier Dolan and the transgender directing duo Lilly and Lana Wachowski.
