Support This Animated Short About Queer Love & The Magic of Stevie Nicks

the shawl

The Shawl tells the story of how two queer artists fell in love through the power of Stevie.

You have less than two days to donate your support to The Shawl, a gorgeous new animated short that tells the real-life love story of queer artists Shane O'Neill and Dusty Lynn Childers, whom were brought together in the early days of their courtship by a shared passion for queen Stevie Nicks.

The film is directed by Sara Kiener, who's worked in distribution on such movies as Obvious Child and Beach Rats, and illustrated by New York Times-featured artist Brianne Farley. Here's a piece of her work for The Shawl:Shane_and_dusty_flat_0

Shane O'Neill is known around New York City as a writer and videographer for such publications as the Times and Huffington Post, and for his critically-acclaimed monthly variety show, Tonight's Special With Shane Shane. Childers is a fashion designer, also known by the moniker Dusty Tea Shoulders, who's collaborated with everyone from Taylor Mac to Justin Sayre.

"We both knew that we wanted to make a film about Dusty and Shane, but that we had to discover the story organically. So we booked a recording studio and just let them riff," explains Kiener on how she and Farley decided on this project. "The result was literally 4 hours of the best stories we'd ever heard. You can probably hear Brianne and I in the original recording trying to swallow our laughter. It was hard to pick just one story, and we definitely wrestled with a couple different ideas, but we ultimately decided on The Shawl because it's all about how Dusty and Shane fell in love, how their love for Stevie kept them close even when they were far apart (spoiler, it's tastefully NSFW), and also chalk full of gay tailgating scenes at Stevie Nicks concerts, with a dash of woo woo style witchcraft."

The team are hoping to put out the film in March, and with less than two days to go, they're just shy of their $15,000 fundraising goal to complete the production. Donate to this project here.
