In his first Oscar nomination, Mahershala Ali is taking home the award for best supporting actor for playing Juan in Moonlight.
Ali accepted the trophy during the first award of the evening. In his acceptance speech, he thanked his mentors and shared a humbling outlook on what it means to be an actor.
"It's not about you," he said. "It's about these characters. You're a servant. You're in service to these characters."
He said that it was "a gift getting to work with" the Moonlight cast and screenwriter Barry Jenkins.
He ended his speech by thanking his wife and revealing another big announcement.
"She just had a daughter four days ago," he said.
