If you're still worried about a '90s kid's television franchise maintaining its relevance with a 2017 reboot, you must be thinking about something other than
Power Rangers.
The film, which already looks to have special effects of any other superhero blockbuster, is going for a genuine high school feel with its protagonists, mainly Yellow Ranger Trini (Becky G), who will have a moment when she's revealed to be part of the LGBTQ community.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film's second act has a scene where, after a comment about "boyfriend problems," it's made clear that Trini is questioning her sexuality and may, in fact, be having girlfriend problems.
Director Dean Israelite called the small moment "pivotal" to the direction of the film. "For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is," Israelite told THR, "she hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, 'That's OK.' The movie is saying, 'That's OK,' and all the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."
Power Rangers opens in theaters Friday, March 24. Read the full THR story here.
