Melissa McCarthy & Richard E. Grant On Can You Ever Forgive Me & Queer Loneliness
How a queer, platonic love story shapes this 90s crime caper.
Can You Ever Forgive Me? adapts the bestselling memoir of writer Lee Israel (played by Melissa McCarthy in what could be a career-defining dramatic role) a lesbian biographer who turned to crime when she found herself penniless and alone in the early 90s. In the film, Israel's isolation is palpable, and its when she connects with fellow queer Jack Hock (played by Richard E. Grant) -- over drinks at iconic New York City gay bar Julius -- that she finally finds the camaraderie she's been longing for. OUT Culture Editor Rose Dommu sat down with McCarthy and Grant to chat about the sense of isolation both of these queer characters felt and how their platonic love story shapes the film.
