Janelle Monáe Will Play Dorothy Pitman Hughes in Gloria Steinem Biopic

Monáe will play the activist who co-founded Ms. Magazine with Steinem.

Undisputed MVP of 2018 Janelle Monae, who has conquered both music and film, has signed onto the upcoming Gloria Steinem biopic, solidifying her status as queen of the silver screen. Monae will play activist and Ms. Magazine co-founder Dorothy Pitman Hughes.

Deadline reports that the film, based on Steinem's memoir The Glorias: A Life On The Road, will also star Alicia Vikander (!) and Julianne Moore (!!) as Steinem at different ages. Says Deadline: "The Glorias will follow Steinem's journey to become a crusader for equal rights and her groundbreaking work as a journalist and campaigner."

Hughes is one of America's feminist heroes who, in addition to her work with Steinem -- which extended to co-founding the Women's Action Alliance in 1971 -- also organized the first shelter for women suffering from domestic abuse in New York City and co-founded both the New York City Agency for Child Development.

Monae appeared in critically acclaimed NASA drama Hidden Figures, Amazon's Philip K. Dick adaptation Electric Dreams and stars in upcoming Steve Carell action drama (yes, it's a thing) Welcome to Marwen. She's also attached to an upcoming Harriet Tubman biopic starring Cynthia Erivo which is so incredible I can't even process it right now. Talk about a Q.U.E.E.N.!
