Lorde's New Single & Video for 'Green Light' are Here
Listen to the Pure Heroine singer unpack her first major heartbreak.
After a week of teasing her highly anticipated comeback, "Royals" singer Lorde returns today with a triumphant new single, "Green Light." The track was co-written and co-produced with Bleachers' Jack Antonoff, and is the first taste of Lorde's sophomore album, Melodrama, which follows 2013's breakout Pure Heroine.
During an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, Lorde said the song is about her first major heartbreak: "It's not something that I really am used to writing about," she revealed. "It took me a while to be able to figure out how to write about that." On Twitter yesterday Lorde added that "Green Light" is equally complex, funny, sad and joyous, introducing the first chapter of a larger story she'll tell us through this forthcoming LP.
In the Grant Singer-directed music video, Lorde works through her emotions in familiar environments--walking with headphones in around the city, thrashing alone in a neon-lit club and throwing her head out of a car window. "I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it," she sings above a powerful chorus, at one point dancing wildly on top of a SUV.
