In Gaby Dellal's forthcoming film, 3 Generations, Elle Fanning plays Ray, a teenager wrestling with his gender identity, alongside mother Maggie (Naomi Watts), lesbian grandmother Dolly (Susan Sarandon) and absent father Craig (Tate Donovan).
Ray's request for female-to-male hormone therapy unravels the complex family dynamic, forcing them all to work through more than just his transition, but also Maggie's tangled relationship with Craig. Through a layered narrative of three very different generations, the film ultimately lands on a message of embracing change and understanding perspectives outside your own.

The movie's exploration of identity is reflected in KT Tunstall's musical contribution, "Fit In," which the Scottish singer/songwriter penned for 3 Generation's official soundtrack. A slow-building track, Tunstall sings about self-acceptance on the new single, scheduled for release May 5 ahead of the full soundtrack's premiere May 12 on Lakeshore Records.
"It was a challenge writing something that felt celebratory and empowering, whilst at the same time remaining authentic to a continuing sense of struggle in Ray's life," Tunstall told OUT. "I needed an element of normalcy to the feel of the song; this is what 'human' is, and we are galvanized by our shared experiences, good and bad. Searching, asking, probing. But underneath all of those things, the message is that if there is a solid acceptance of oneself, anything is surmountable."
Listen to the OUT premiere of KT Tunstall's "Fit In," below, ahead of 3 Generations' official theater release this Friday, May 5.
