Leland, the queer singer/songwriter who's penned hits for Troye Sivan, Selena Gomez and Allie X, is riding the release of his solo single, "Mattress," with a new lyric video. Set above glistening synth production, the artist sings about wanting more from a friendship and constantly staying silent for fearing of ruining things. "Why do I always do this to myself?" he asks on the chorus. "I let you go with someone else, when all I want's my body on your mattress."

But this openly queer confessional is something Leland admits took him time to be able to sing publicly. "I would never have been able to write that song if I had not been comfortable with myself," Leland told OUT. "This song wouldn't exist if I wasn't a gay artist that's out and proud, and able to write about the feelings and emotions I'm going through. It's sort of a sad lyric with a happy beat, and that's really the tone I'm setting for my music."
Before embarking on his solo career, Leland had established himself as a certified hitmaker, most notably working closely with Sivan on songs like "Youth" and Martin Garrix's "There For You." He's also a longtime collaborator with Allie X, having co-penned highlights on both her albums, including CollXtion II's career-defining single, "Paper Love." A proven staple for acclaimed alt-pop, Leland made his strongest crossover with Selena Gomez's latest release, "Fetish."
