As someone involved in nightlife, there's something producers and promoters say far too often to keep track of. "I'd love to book more women and trans people to DJ, but I just don't know any."
First of all, if you don't know any female artists in the arena you work in, you might want to reexamine your own gender biases. And secondly, now you don't have that excuse anymore.
A group of New York creatives partnered with Here You Are New York have created a list, housed in a shared Google Doc, that compiles female, femme, trans and gender nonconforming electronic artists on the East Coast. As of now, there are over 200 DJs and musicians included, and the group are allowing more to add themselves to the list by submission. There's also a more visual version of the list, paired with photos of the artists.
This is a tool that's so important for electronic music, which is still an overwhelmingly male-dominated field -- not in terms of the actual amount of artists, but the recognition and work they receive.
