Hailing from Brooklyn, Deitre is the newest queer glam rock band and your next obsession. Their sound is emotional, inspiring, and raw, blending together multiple eras and genres including '70s hard rock, '80s dance and glam, '90s grunge, and '00s pop.
OUT caught up with Deitre frontman Richie Bee to discuss the inspriations behind their music, and what we can expect to see next from the band.
OUT: Tell us about what inspires Deitre's sound
Richie Bee: A lot of the stories we choose to tell are really reflective on where we are at emotionally. I lost my father to cancer when we were writing our first album, and so a lot of the songs carry a much more angsty [and] darker tone. "I'm Out" is a perfect example of where I was at after everything happened. I decided that I'm going do whatever I want to do -- be whoever I want to be -- and if anybody has a problem with it, then they didn't need to be in my life. Lessons of following your dreams and embracing who you are are all things I learned from my father, and those are a lot of the messages in our songs.
What, specifically, is your new song "Generation" about?
"Generation" is about all of us coming together and fighting for each other. We really meant it to be an anthem to bring people together and inspire people to fight for what they want. And what better time to release it than for Pride month! We need to celebrate one another. We need to celebrate our diversity.
What's next for Deitre?
We have a lot of exciting things coming up in the near future. We are throwing a Pride showcase at Gold Sounds in New York, Thursday, June 21. We will be featuring queer and gender fluid acts. That same night we will be shooting our second music video to "Feeling Good" which just premiered in the short film "FEMME". So come out if you want to be a part of it - show starts at 7:30pm.
We have also been working on an EP that's headed into a more dance and rock type of sound. Singles from that will be coming out this summer so follow us on Instagram and Facebook to stay in the loop.
