Watch Ben Platt’s Delightful, Gay Cover of "Shallow"
Things that we're far from: the shallow, and a same-sex reboot of the thrice remade A Star Is Born, for which Grammy and Tony award winner Ben Platt would like to be considered. And given his musky vocals in a recently uploaded cover duet of Shallow with Max Sheldon at Feinstein's/54 Below, we think Platt's got the stuff.
Sheldon and Platt's duet was just a small part of the former's debut "More You Please" show at 54 Below, featuring Kathryn Gallagher (Spring Awakening, Jagged Little Pill) and Stephanie Amoroso (Sleep No More).
Of course, the pitch is made in jest -- and knowing Hollywood, the queer Jackson Maine would probably be played by... capital 'A' Ally Billy Ray Cyrus or one of the brothers Jonas. But an Italian boy from New York can dream, right?
Platt has been making headlines recently for reasons at least not directly pertaining to Lady Gaga. In February, he came out through a touching music video to "Ease My Mind" featuring Charlie Carver, from his new album Sing to Me Instead -- out March 29. He also recently appeared on Ellen, where he discussed coming out and his upcoming role in Ryan Murphy's The Politician.
"Hopefully we're past the time where it has to be this whole giant announcement," he told DeGeneres, "and it can just be part of who you are."
Platt will tour select cities in the month of May to showcase his new album, four songs from which are available to stream now on Spotify.
