Of course it takes a queer person and Miley Cyrus's dad to come up with a genre-busting bonafide hit merging hip-hop beats and country twang.
Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" featuring Billy Ray Cyrus has spent the last 14 weeks on the Billboard chart at number one (and 18 weeks on the chart in total). Does this put him in the category of the song of the summer? Definitely! Er, yeehaw!

According to Stereogum, few songs have spent this long in the top slot. They include "Macarena" by Los Del Rio, "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John, and Whitney Houston's rendition of "I Will Always Love You." That should give you a sense of the sort of hits we're talking about here.
The two songs to hold on the longest at 16 weeks were Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's 1995 ballad "One Sweet Day," and another genre crossover hit, "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, Justin Bieber, in 2017.
Lil Nas X enlightened us all a few weeks ago when he effectively came out as something other than straight while tweeting a very happy Pride message to fans.

In any case, watch that "Old Town Road" video. It is just delightful.
