Yesterday was a day for the history books, with a 5-4 vote affirming the dignity of LGBT Americans. It is something that will forever be tied to President Obama, who has proven himself an active and willing ally in the pursuit of equality. But as he has said many times before, the progress the United States has seen on marriage equality is the result of the work of thousands.
After the announcement had been made, he called up Jim Obergefell, the leading plaintiff in Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that made same-sex marriage legal across the nation.
"Your leadership on this has changed the country," President Obama said, later concluding with, "I couldn't be prouder of you and your husband.
