President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Ben Carson, his former opponent for the Republican nomination, to head Housing and Urban Development.
"I am thrilled to nominate Dr. Ben Carson as our next Secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development," Trump said in a statement. "Ben Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities."
The position of House Secretary was elevated to Cabinet level as part of former President Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" agenda, which Carson has ridiculed as a colossal failure, the LA Times reports.
Carson also openly opposes gay marriage, stating recently that it will only lead to "mass killings" and "utter chaos."
The decision makes Trump's Cabinet that much more able to dismantle and redirect work done by President Obama regarding policies that will affect low-income families.

"I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly by strengthening communities that are most in need," Carson said in a statement. "We have much work to do in enhancing every aspect of our nation and ensuring that our nation's housing needs are met."
Carson, it should be noted, initially turned down a Cabinet position citing his lack of government experience, though that somehow didn't keep him from running for president.
