Los Angeles County has reported 13 cases of meningitis, seven of which involve gay men.
Now health officials in both Los Angeles and Orange counties are recommending gay men get vaccinated.
While many groups are at a high risk of infenction, the Centers for Disease Control and the California Department of Public Health have singled out gay and bisexual men in their warning.
"We acknowledge this broadens our prior recommendations, but after careful consultation with the CDC and health officers in other affected jurisdictions, we consider that this expansion of the vaccination recommendations is a necessary step to suppress this outbreak," said Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, LA County interim health officer.
Public health clinics provide free vaccination at no cost for all people at high risk.
