In 1989, Princess Diana broke social norms by shaking the hand of an AIDS patient before kissing him on the cheek. Nearly three decades later, her son, Prince Harry, paid a visit to the same hospital.
Harry made a public visit to Mildmay Mission Hospital this past December and has now made a separate, more intimate trip as a way to spend more time with its patients and staff.
"He had a chance to speak to staff there for a bit longer," People Magazine reports. "He met with patients and spent some time learning a bit more about the work there."
With HIV rates in the UK rising, the royal family have been working hard to raise awareness about the disease and remove stigma.
"HIV rates in the UK continue to rise despite years of progress in treating the illness," the Royal Family wrote on Facebook. "And one of the biggest factors has been that up to 17% of HIV positive patients are unaware of their status and unintentionally pass on the virus to partners."
Princess Diana had visited the hospital 17 times before her death--only three of which were public.
