Torraine Futurum to Trans Youth in Trump's America: 'We Are Going to Win'

The trans model and artist responsed to Trump's new bathroom guidelines in a candid video.

New York-based model Torraine Futurum responded to Trump's reversal of bathroom guidelines today in a video highlighting the dangers transgender people will face in the wake of his discriminatory laws. Earlier this year, Futurum released her debut album, Colonial, which tackled systematic oppression and reflected on her experience as a trans woman; she was also featured in the new Adidas Superstar Campaign, shot by queer photographer Ethan James Green.

In her candid video, Torraine said Trump's reversal is dangerous because "it paints trans people as sexual predators," adding that it's "an overused, sad and apparently effective tactic" of keeping trans bodies from taking up the space they deserve.

"I'm thinking about a trans girl being forced to share a bathroom with the man who called her a faggot on the subway platform," Torraine said, speaking to trans individuals that don't pass as cisgender and face daily harassment on the streets. "I'm thinking about if I had to share a bathroom with the man who chased me down a New York City street in broad daylight saying he was going to destroy my pussy and that he was going to kill me," she continued.

Trump's administration has blood on their hands, Torraine said, adding that it's clear people fighting for these laws want trans people dead. Despite the resistance, she believes trans individuals are not only on the right side of history, but they're winning. "I know it's a burden to have to fight for civil rights and to fight for generations below you," she said. "Hopefully we will be the last generation that has to fight to be seen as humans."
