Following the midterm elections, Wilton Manors, Florida is now completely run by LGBTQ people. The last straight commissioner, Scott Newton, lost his re-election bid. There were two spots open for commissioner, and Newton came in third. The city's current mayor, Gary Resnick, secured one of the available seats and Paul Rolli won the other. Both men identify as gay. Justin Flippen won the mayoral election, and will be taking over for Resnick.
For lack of better words, Wilton Manors is one of the gayest cities in the United States. It has the second highest percentage of same-sex couples following Provincetown.
"LGBTQ people are severely under-represented at every level of government, so to have an all-LGBTQ city commission and an LGBTQ mayor in Wilton Manors would be an exciting moment, especially given the strong LGBTQ community there," Sean Meloy of the Victory Fund said in a statement.
Wilton Manors is the second city in the United States to have an all-LGBTQ city council, following Palm Springs.
