Gus Kenworthy Shares Homophobic Hate Comments He Gets Online
Life as an out athlete comes with its fair share of haters.
Despite the love and attention he's received throughout the Olympics, Gus Kenworthy wants the world at large to know that life as an out athlete is not all on-screen gay kisses and having Adam Rippon as your BFF. "Them: It's 2018 nobody cares that you're gay. Homophobia doesn't exist anymore. Get over yourself," he said in a tweet this week, attaching screenshots from his YouTube channel of vile, homophobic hate comments.

The comments run the gamut of calling the Olympic athlete a pedophile to wishing that he'll die from AIDS.

Many rushed to show their support for Kenworthy, including former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton.
\u201c@guskenworthy @yashar I am so sorry Gus you are dealing with this. All those vile comments reflect on the people making them, not you. Thank you for always representing #TeamUSA so well, on and off skis.\u201d— Gus Kenworthy (@Gus Kenworthy) 1519760921
With all the support Kenworthy and Adam Rippon have received this year, owning their narratives as the first openly gay athletes in the Winter Olympics, it can be easy to forget that as public figures they are more susceptible than most to online hate. Thankfully, Kenworthy has an Olympic medal and a hot boyfriend to help take his mind off the comments of some small-minded bigots.
