Great news for gays of all genders! According to TV Line, beloved actor and singer Christine Baranski will be starring alongside legendary bi actor and activist in a new show for HBO.
The Gilded Age, created by Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey fame, also stars Amanda Peet and Morgan Spector and is about aristocrats in 1880s New York. Baranski will play the stubborn, high-class Agnes van Rhijn -- who, according to a plot description that's extremely for the gays, "managed to hook a husband just as her family's plantation was collapsing. Nixon is playing her sister, Ava Brook, who is forced to rely on her sister's money when she has none. (Honestly, relatable.)
While The Gilded Age does not appear to be explicitly LGBTQ+, basically everything about the project screams instant queer canon.
Baranski is an undisputed gay icon with 15 Emmy nominations, two Tony Awards, and an honorary Oscar nomination* for being way too good in Bad Moms Christmas. You can also catch her bringing that Big Broadway Energy to the Mamma Mia! franchise, The Good Wife, and spin-off The Good Fight.
It must be noted that lesbians have loved Christine Baranski at least going back toHow the Grinch Stole Christmas, playing the iconically named Martha May Whovier. Who doesn't adore a lady in red?
Nixon, who married wife Christine Marinoni in 2012, is most widely known for her Emmy-winning role as caustic attorney Miranda Hobbes on fellow HBO show Sex and the City. However, the actress is more than just a pair of Louboutin heels -- she's a two-time Tony winner and a former candidate for governor of New York, where she ran in the primary against incumbent Andrew Cuomo last year. Now that's what we call some pedigree!
Seeing these two play snooty, refined sisters in a period drama with amazing costumes is truly a gift to us all. Imagine the furs! The withering stares! Now both at the same time! I can't wait to have another reason to get an HBO NOW subscription now that Game of Thrones is over and I cancelled mine.
* Unfortunately, Baranski was in no way nominated for this film. Justice for Mary Sunshine!
