Students who survived the Parkland, Florida shooting were greeted with very special celebrity guests during a rehearsal for their upcoming production of Spring Awakening yesterday.
As Huffington Post also reported, former Glee stars Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff (as well as other members from the original Broadway run of Spring Awakening) surprised students of BARCLAY Performing Arts--which included three survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Alfonso Calderon, Sawyer Garrity, and Cameron Kasky-- as they prepared for their May 2 opening of the groundbreaking Broadway show.
On Tuesday, Lea Michele tweeted, "Very honored to meet such incredible, talented and inspiring young adults who are fighting to make a change." Two of the students that survived the shooting, Calderon and Kasky, were instrumental in founding the gun control advocacy group Never Again MSD amidst the terrible tragedy.
"Now more than ever, this musical carries important weight," the show's producers wrote. "In light of the recent Parkland tragedy, the BARCLAY Performing Arts family feels it is not only a gorgeous show, but a crucial live theatre experience for our community."
The show will premiere at the Boca Black Box Center for the Arts in Boca Raton, Florida.
