The film follows Joshua M. Ferguson's journey to receive a non-binary birth certificate.
A new feature-length documentary titled They Are Joshua explores one non-binary individual's quest to achieve the proper gender assignment on their birth certificate.
Joshua M. Ferguson is a filmmaker, writer and advocate living in Vancouver, who became the first person in Ontario, Canada, to receive a non-binary birth certificate in May of 2018.

The documentary follows Ferguson's journey to feel properly recognized by society: "Assigned male at birth, this filmmaker, activist, author and Ph.D. never felt like a boy or a girl and lost touch with their non-binary identity growing up living their life as a gay man for almost two decades," the film's website explains.
