Wife Finds Out Husband Is Gay, Sues Him for $600,000
Ladies, if you unknowingly married a gay man and eventually found out, what would your reaction be? Would you cry? Scream? Sing "Before He Cheats" at karaoke and replace all the pronouns? Or would you lawyer up and file a lawsuit, the way a South African woman has done after learning her six-year marriage was a sham?
Times Live reports that an unnamed woman in Cape Town is demanding R9m -- just under $600,000 -- due to the "emotional pain and psychological trauma," which led to a loss of income, after unwittingly becoming her husband's beard. The husband waited until two months before their sixth anniversary to come out to her, "since which time they have no longer lived together as man and wife," judge Mark Sher explained in a statement on Wednesday.
"The basis for the damages claim and the extraordinary sums which are sought...is that the [husband] is alleged to have 'misrepresented' to her, prior to their marriage, that he was a heterosexual male who wished to marry her so that they could have children in a heterosexual, monogamous marriage," said Sher.
According to the judge, the wife's affidavit was "largely devoted to narrating, in the finest and most intimate detail, how [the husband] came to reveal that he was homosexual," going on to "set out in further explicit detail the contents of highly private and personal communications." He also called the wife out for snooping into her husband's "private internet browsing activity," meaning she now knows exactly what he was searching on Pornhub, as well as his private communications with his priest.
"Publication of this material could be said to constitute an unjustified breach of [the husband's] right to privacy, if not that of [the wife] herself," said Sher, who was clearly not having it. Not only did he dismiss the case, he ordered the woman's lawyer, Fareed Moosa, to forfeit his fee and pay the husband's legal fees. The judge claimed that Moosa's suit included everything but "the proverbial kitchen sink," cramming in countless accusations in hopes that something would stick, an "irregular step and an abuse of process."
The judge also claimed that the woman was seeking such a high amount in order to pay her excessively high legal fees, which totaled at least R946,000 (over $62,000). This lady clearly doesn't know how to pick a man.
Still, she's inspiring. Ladies, the next time you see a cute guy only to find out he's gay, just tell him "I'll see you in court!"
