The first gay U.K. couple to have a child via surrogacy are splitting up, and while that's sad...girl, that's just the exposition.
Tony and Barrie Drewitt-Barlow became part of British LGBTQ+ history in the 90s when they had their daughter Saffron through surrogacy. But after decades of marriage, the pair are splitting up because one of them is in love with Saffron's ex-boyfriend.
Grab some popcorn, I'll wait!
Barrie fell "head over heels" for bisexual 25-year-old Scott Hutchinson after the young man andaffron split up. Hutchinson had been Barrie's personal assistant for the past seven years, and the two clearly became close through their working relationship -- close enough for the older man to end his marriage.
"I've fallen in love with Scott and he has done the same," Barrie told The Sun. "I feel stupid at my age to have these feelings about someone other than Tony and half my age." The husbands had grown apart during their marriage, eventually moving into separate bedrooms. After four years of this, their relationship became fully platonic. Barrie calls Tony his true love: "I will never not adore him. he's the most sensitive, loving person...But somewhere along the way we turned from lovers into friends."
When it came to Hutchinson, Barrie said that "when you know something is right, it's right." While he and Hutchinson "have not made definite plans," they'd like to get married. But, he doesn't want anyone to think he's having a typical male mid-life crisis. "If I was having one I'd buy myself a Porsche 911." You know, instead of marrying his 19-year-old daughter's ex-boyfriend.
Barrie called his daughter's previous relationship with his new boyfriend "puppy love," explaining that they "never had a sexual relationship," which is...comforting, I guess. And in fact, it was his husband Tony (whose health began to deteriorate after he was diagnosed with cancer) who played matchmaker. "It was Tony who first raised Scott with me. He said: 'If I ended up going, Scott would be the person I'd like to see you with,'" Barrie recalled. He initially waved off his husband's attempts to get them together, stuck on the age difference.
"I joked with him, 'Is this your way of getting rid of me?' and he replied: 'No, this is my way of seeing you happy before anything happens to me.'" Barrie recalled. Once Barrie and Scott got together, the husbands decided to split amicably, as they always "want to be there for our children."
"This is the real deal," insisted Barrie, whose new boyfriend is in fact living with him, his husband, and their two children. "I feel like I'm living in a commune," he joked. "Our children are still in a stable set-up, more so than many other families have...But now Dad's got a new fella and we are one bigger happy family instead."
That's gonna be one interesting Christmas dinner...
