Cara Delevingne will be recognized for her commitment to supporting The Trevor Project in June. The actress and one-time supermodel will be presented with The Hero Award at the organization's annual TrevorLive New York gala.
The honor will put Delevingne's name alongside the likes of Lady Gaga, Lena Waithe, Tom Ford, Tyler Oakley, Sir Ian McKellen, Ryan Murphy, and others who have been honored by the event. It comes after Delevingne has made a name for herself not only as a performer -- after a career as an in-demand supermodel, she changed her focus to pursue acting in films like Suicide Squad, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and Paper Towns -- she has also built up a reputation for being outspoken. She was notably one of the few celebrities leading the charge on boycotting Coachella but has also spoken out against Harvey Weinstein and R. Kelly. She's also been vocal about sexual harassment in fashion and her own battle with depression. And she does so, regardless of the effects to her following, losing sometimes as many as 50,000 followers for her statements. But she also has said she uses her Instagram to connect with and help the youth who may be going through troubling times.
"I'm humbled and truly speechless by The Trevor Project's decision to honor me with this year's Hero Award," she said in a statement. "A 'hero' to me is someone who stands up for what they believe in. They help to make change for those who are underserved or discriminated against. I strive to acknowledge those who feel like they don't fit into a box and make sure they know, in both good and bad times, that there is always someone there to support them. I'm inspired and motivated by The Trevor Project's tireless, life-saving work to support LGBTQ youth in crisis, and I'm extremely proud to be a part of such a resilient community."
The gala will take place June 17.
