5 Major LGBTQ+ Wins Happened During the 2022 Midterm Elections
It was a big night for LGBTQ+ politicians during this year's midterm elections.
With a lot at stake in the current political climate, folks all over the country cast their votes (either in-person or via mail-in ballots) and let their voices be heard for what they want to see change and who they want to see leading us -- and that included a handful of out-and-proud queer and trans politicians.

Maura Healy became the first out lesbian governor in U.S. history.
The Massachusetts Democratic politician became the first out lesbian governor in the U.S. after her win during the 2022 midterms.

Jared Polis was reelected governor of Colorado.
The Democratic politician made history when he was elected Colorado's governor in 2018, making him the first out gay man elected governor of any U.S. state. Now, he is also the first out gay man to be reelected in the role.

James Roesener became the first trans man elected to U.S. State Legislature.
The New Hampshire-based politician is one of only six out trans men in elected office across the entirety of the country, winning the seat for the state's 22nd House District, Ward 8.

Robert Garcia is the first out gay immigrant to be elected to congress.
Garcia, who has been serving as the mayor of Long Beach, California since 2014, won the race for the U.S. House seat in the state's 42nd Congressional District. He was born in Peru and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 5.

Becca Balint becomes Vermont's first woman & first LGBTQ+ representative in congress
An out lesbian and a Democrat, Balint won the race for Vermont's only U.S. House seat (which was left open when Democratic incumbent Peter Welch decided to run for senate) with more than 60 percent of the vote.
