O’Shae Sibley, a 28-year-old professional dancer, was reportedly stabbed to death at a gas station in Brooklyn after voguing with a group of friends to Beyoncé's music.
According to The New York Times, a group of men approached Sibley and his friends, telling them to stop dancing and shouting out gay slurs in their direction. The altercation escalated, which led to one man stabbing Sibley, according to a police report.
A close friend of Sibley’s, Otis Pena, attempted to stop the bleeding by pressing on his wound. But before they arrived at the Maimonides Medical Center, Sibley had already been pronounced dead.
Pena provided further details about this horrifying incident in a Facebook live-stream. “They murdered him because he’s gay, because he stood up for his friends,” Pena said in the video. “His name was O’Shae and you all killed him. You all murdered him right in front of me.”
The report indicates that Sibley and his friends had been dancing and voguing to Beyoncé’s Renaissance at the gas station before being confronted and attacked. Considering that this album was released as a tribute to Black and Latinx queer people within ballroom culture, the context surrounding this senseless murder is even more disturbing.
An active police investigation is still underway, but no arrests have been made so far. According to authorities, the hate crimes unit is currently involved in this case.
We hope that justice can be served for Sibley and his loved ones.
