Hello Out readers.
We have some troubling news to report, as a San Francisco drag queen who performs under the name Hilary Rivers was detained by ICE as he left the courthouse following an asylum hearing.
Rivers is a gay immigrant from Central America who attended a scheduled asylum hearing on June 26.
As a part of President Trump's increased crackdown on immigration, ICE agents have begun detaining people as they leave immigration courts in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Rivers was detained just one day after competing in the Miss & Mr. Safe Latino 2025 Pageant, and is reportedly being held in an ICE detention center near Bakersfield.
Now, local groups like San Francisco Pride and Galería de la Raza are calling for the community to rally behind Rivers and write letters of support to him while he is being detained.
"There’s not a more textbook case of what asylum was created for than a case like his," Milli Atkinson, legal director at the San Francisco Immigrant Legal Defense Collaborative, said to the San Francisco Chronicle. "To have them take him away from his community during Pride Week, when he’s fleeing persecution for his queer identity, and when he had just participated in that pageant … is just horrific to me, is just a disgrace, and people should really be outraged and ashamed by what our government is doing."
