"For me, the Latex Ball is an annual pilgrimage," says Kevin Tachman who photographs the yearly event benefitting GMHC. "There's an energy in the air completely unlike any other event I attend or get to photograph, a feeling of both creativity and solidarity."
The ball, now in its 26th year, is the largest in the world for the house and ball communities. It originated as fundraiser for HIV awareness and prevention among a community that was deeply impacted by the AIDS crisis. "While in many ways it's the complete opposite to the other vogue ball I shoot--the Met Gala--the Latex Ball has its own glamour and grit I wouldn't trade for anything," continues Tachman. "This year, instead of focusing on the death drops on the stage I wanted to capture more personal off-stage moments with the guests, contestants, and winners. Take a look."
