Hello, Out readers!
With today's newsletter, I want to spend some time talking about Netflix's new film Emilia Pérez. You've probably heard about the new film, which stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and trans actress Karla Sofía Gascón, as its one of this year's Oscar frontrunners, and Gascón is likely to become the first trans woman nominated for an acting Oscar.
While I praised the film, and especially the title character and how her transness is handled, some critics found the film to be transphobic.
I've addressed those critics' complaints with the film in a new article, explaining why I, as a trans woman, think the movie is excellent trans representation.
I talk about how the movie treats Emilia's physical transition, Gascón's performance as both pre- and post-transition Emilia, and what tropes exist in the film. If you want to find out more, read the entire article here!
