In the month since its release, UPSAHL's single "The Other Team" has been streamed over 200,000 times, possibly because of how relatable it is. The low-fi pop jam is a catchy take on what it feels like to crush on someone who isn't into you -- the perfect rom-com bop. But while what sets "The Other Team" apart from most lovestruck pop songs is its subject: UPSAHL's gay best friend.
"The song takes you through different everyday experiences that we've all been through when we see someone we like," UPSAHL told OUT. "We've all been there in one way or another, so I wanted to capture those moments and turn them into something we can all laugh about."
UPSAHL's bestie, Zack, inspired the song: the two dated in middle school before Zack came out. "I feel like everyone can relate to this in someway because we've all fallen for someone we can't have. In my experience, I was into someone that was into guys, but at the end of the day, everyone is always swinging for somebody else's 'Other Team.'"
UPSAHL decided to set the video in high school to capture the eternal teen heartbreak of unrequited love. The video is full of "missed connections between characters...It definitely has some Breakfast Club vibes, so it really takes you back to high school and the whirlwind of emotions that go with it; even though I was just in high school, it still felt like a little throwback."
Zack was on set during the video shoot, and cameras captured the duo getting playful. "I've always had my friends on set with me for my past videos, whether they are in the videos or just hanging, and it creates such a fun vibe for everyone there," says UPSAHL. "I'm just really thankful to have such supportive friends that I can ask to come to an all day shoot with me and they respond with, 'yeah I was already planning on it.'" Clearly, not all teenage crushes end in heartbreak.
