Equalpride — the parent company of Out and The Advocate — kicked off Pride month with a Broadway-themed celebration of the cover stars of these magazines.
Dubbed Pride of Broadway, the event toasted Jonathan Groff (Merrily We Roll Along) and Wayne Brady (The Wiz), who cover the May/June issues of the iconic LGBTQ+ brands (Out and The Advocate, respectively). The party, held Monday evening at Somewhere Nowhere NYC, was hosted by Sam Champion (Eyewitness News, WABC-TV) and Nina West (RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 9).
After Champion conducted a short Q&A with the cover stars, West led a margarita toast of Groff and Brady with a little help from Hornitos, which brought out sparklers for the celebratory "marg mode" moment. In addition to Hornitos, sponsors of the event included Kargo, Discover, Tide, Downy, and Vitaminwater. WABC-TV and On the Red Carpet were media partners.
It wouldn’t be a Broadway party without musical numbers. West channeled Ursula with a rendition of “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from The Little Mermaid. And Tituss Burgess gave a surprise show-stopping performance of "On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever)."
Adding to the entertainment throughout the evening, Joey with the Mustache DJed the party with a musical-inspired set while Marcos the Tatted Violinist played stringed covers of hit songs. After the program concluded, guests headed to the rooftop for portraits by photographer Matt Monath and stunning views of the NYC skyline.
Guests included Michael James Scott (Aladdin), Jelani Alladin (Frozen Broadway, Fellow Travelers), Miss Bouvèé, Kennedy Kanagawa (Into the Woods), Plasma (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Rosé (RuPaul’s Drag Race), equalpride CEO Mark Berryhill, Jackie Cox (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Judy Gold (Outstanding), and Jelani Remy (The Lion King).
