Readers' Choice Award Nomination: Laura Jane Grace
The lead singer of Against Me! is the most visible trans person in music
In January, Against Me! released its sixth album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, and the tracks on the record tell the story of front woman Laura Jane Grace's struggle with gender identity, especially since she came out as a trans woman at age 31 in a Rolling Stone interview in 2012. Since that time, Grace has also become the most well-known trans person in music, and she has embraced her role as an advocate in a year in which transgender visibility has reached new heights. Most recently, she's filmed a 10-part AOL documentary series, True Trans With Laura Jane Grace that kicks off Oct. 10, on National Coming Out Day.
"The opportunity I had while shooting this show was nothing short of tremendous," Grace told Time magazine, referring to the series. "Getting the chance to listen to other people tell their stories of how life shaped their identities and views on gender couldn't help but further inform my own understanding of just how complicated and also how simple all of it really is."
