Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten, Lemaire
Fresh from Paris Fashion Week, these spring/summer menswear looks are catching fire. From crop tops to pink shots, stylist Martin Gregory Jerez outlines the trends that will be hot in the upcoming season.
Dries Van Noten
Out with the shockingly vibrant Valentino pink, and in with the delicate and subtle hue of blush pink! From Amiri to Walter Van Beirendonck, pink was presented in a myriad of fabrics and textures. In terms of seasonal fabric, the relaxed leather structure of Dior Men’s pink jacket was a stark contrast to the sheer technical nylon of Wales Bonner’s hoodie and short shorts. Speaking of sheer, one of Gucci’s runway surfers donned a sheer rosy polo shirt with dark brown shorts. At the last creatively helmed show of the master of color and prints himself, Dries Van Noten, a model wore a see-through crushed organza trench coat paired with khaki trousers. Almost every top-tier runway show had a shot of pink in its lineup, so I think it’s safe to say that you can’t go wrong with a little wink of pink.
Louis Vuitton
I believe the fashionable man has finally expanded his artillery of extra-large flower brooches into the boundless universe of vintage costume brooches. Now, if you’re a creatively quirky vintage fanatic, you may be no stranger to the land of shiny metal brooches. But fear not, replicating this trend only takes an easy trip to the local antique market. At Amiri, crystal-studded flower brooches adorned not only the lapels of a blazer but also tied as fasteners to the neckline. Dior presented the brooch in the form of Hylton Nel’s whimsical creatures. Additionally, Louis Vuitton gave some models their “wings” by adorning their jackets with aviation-inspired brooches.
Lemaire
First, there was the fashion fanny pack, but that became too hokey. Then came the micro bags, which blatantly lacked storage. Now, the fashion world has coerced us into thinking that the medium-to-large bag is the go-to option. And well, maybe it is. Almost every other model at the Hermès show was carrying oversized “beach” bags, and that may not be far from the norm for that brand (because who doesn’t want an oversized Hermès bag?). Louis Vuitton sent down models with bright multicolored speedy bags — a bag that’s been made popular again by the likes of Jacob Elordi — in pastel pink, green, and yellow. Almost every model at Lemaire had medium-sized cross-body bags in rich dark leathers. Marine Serre’s version of the handbag looked like oversized Brillo pads, while Zegna’s man was going for an extra-long vacation with two overnight bags in tow. But the winner of “largest bag available” this season has to go to Bluemarble, which had bags the size of an actual human strapped around the models’ shoulders.
Loewe
First off, no — this isn’t your “run-of-the-mill, haphazardly cut way too far above the navel” sort of crop top. This crop is more suggestively playful than its aggressively “out there” counterpart. Resting right along (or on) the navel and usually worn with low rise jeans and a pair of boxers, the new crop only shows a seductive sliver of a happy trail and a peekaboo slip of your belly. At Loewe, these tops were attached to a leather belt at the hem, allowing the wearer to adjust the bottom fit of the crop. Just a hint of happy trail was shown at Prada, as slinky models wore cropped sweaters with slouchy trousers that exposed a hip bone or two. Dsquared2 took the DIY route and slashed its tanks in extreme asymmetrical slits that still left little to the imagination.
Comme des Garcons
Plaid is no longer confined to the fall season. But for spring, it’s the clash of various plaids that really caught my eye. Egonlab excelled with a plaid mix of greens, reds, and blues accompanied by an oversized tee and a fur tote bag. Honestly, it was one of my favorite looks of the season. A subtle mismatch-turned-sublime at Loewe had me in awe: A black-and-cream plaid shawl collar shirt was paired with a long gray-and-white plaid skirt, which was tied around the waist and fastened to a pair of strongly pleated baggy khakis. Craig Green sent out digitally altered plaid shirts in blue, red, and gray where the plaid changed direction and pattern. Fendi introduced plaid in earth tones in the brand’s outerwear and trousers. The master of mixing plaids, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons showed a playful plethora of mismatched plaids in layers and various stitches in the brand’s shirt collection. If you want a fun and playful plaid-on-plaid (on plaid) top for the spring, this should be your go-to brand.
