It's hard to believe that Alex Newell has never had a proper vocal lesson in his life. But that hasn't stopped the 23-year-old Glee alum from racking up hordes of devoted fans and carving out his own ebullient brand of pop: a mix of sticky melodies, church-choir soul, and over-the-top theatrics. Newell re-cently released his debut EP, Power -- and toured with Adam Lambert, who met the young belter when he guest-starred on Glee. Though these days Newell is crisscrossing the country, he recently returned to his hometown of Boston for a special performance. When he wasn't hitting high notes and stomping his heels, he paid a visit to these Beantown musts.
1. Top of the Hub
"It's my favorite restaurant because it has a breathtaking view of all of Boston. Nothing makes me happier than having a mojito and a nice steamed lobster at sunset while looking over my gorgeous city."800 Boylston St.; TopOfTheHub.net
2. Prudential Center
"After that amazing view, work off all you ate shopping at the Pru [and the adjacent Copley Place]. Hit Neiman Marcus for the accessories, Saks for the shoes, Barneys for the clothes, and Tiffany for the jewelry. You really can't go wrong." 800 Boylston St.; PrudentialCenter.com
3. Museum of Fine Arts
"I love to grab a tea, put on one of my scarves, and check out the various exhibits, especially anything fashion-related. It gives me ideas for my tour looks." Avenue of the Arts, 465 Huntington Ave.; MFA.org
4. Boston Opera House
"I recently went to see Beauty and the Beast here, and I absolutely love the stage. I've never been on it, but it's always been a goal of mine to perform there. To anyone reading this, let's make it happen." 539 Washington St.; BostonOperaHouse.com
5. Club Cafe
"Club Cafe is perfect if you want good food and drinks. After dinner, it turns into a club, and you can party the night away. I definitely partied a bit too hard one New Year's Eve." 209 Columbus Ave.; ClubCafe.com
6. Boston Common
"I love taking a stroll here any time of year, but especially during the winter and spring. A perfect view of the State House, the bronze ducks, and the pond -- what more could you ask for?" 139 Tremont St.
7. Kane's Handcrafted Donuts
"They have some of the best doughnuts in Massachusetts. I always keep it simple and stick with the plain. I pair it with a cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee, and I'm ready to slay the day." Two International Place, 90 Oliver St.; KanesHandcrafted.com
