Richard Bernstein; STARMAKER, by Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha, Rizzoli
It's hard to sum up the wonder that is Richard Bernstein. As a fixture on the Studio 54 set, he captured the allure of the disco era through his vibrant portraits of superstars for Andy Warhol's Interview magazine--as well as through iconic imagery for Fiorucci, Vogue, and more.
Given that he never got the proper due for his work as most people attributed his masterpieces to Warhol and others, his story was one that authors and fashion fixtures Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha (who founded MAO Public Relations) wanted to showcase--which they are in their new book: Richard Bernstein; STARMAKER, by Rizzoli (out September 4). As Mauricio said: "We were given full reign of the archives and beyond what we already knew of Richard, discovered so much more of his incredible work. Anyone who thinks they know Richard's work will be surprised at the real breadth of it."
Keep scrolling to check out exclusive photos from the book, which features imagery of icons like Grace Jones (who wrote the foreword to the book, along with Jean-Paul Goude), Divine, Debbie Harry, and more.
Plus, if you're in NYC, the Padilha brothers will be having a book signing at BOOKMARC, 400 Bleecker Street, on September 6 from 6pm to 8pm. In addition, on September 7, the official exhibit (which showcases Bernstein's celebrity portraits ranging from the mid-60s to 2002) opens at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery at 76 Grand Street in SoHo.
