This weekend, as many of us twiddled our thumbs in quarantine, Australia held Sydney's annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. There, thousands turned out for one of the few in-person Pride events so far this year. British pop star Rita Ora closed the event which was held at Sydney Cricket Ground.
Though the show did go on, there were notable differences. Instead of crowding the streets which it has done for 42 years, the parade walked past many seated crowds in the venue. Some 5,000 people marched in the parade including organizations like Dyles on Bikes and more. The procession did not feature massive floats but brought on all the costumes we are used to.
Massive screens projected various videos including one that introduced the competing queens in RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under season one.
