Tom Blyth (Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Russell Tovey (Kevin Matheson on HBO's Looking) play the two main characters in Plainclothes, which is set in 1990s New York.
The movie follows a cop named Lucas (Blyth) performing bait-and-catch missions to arrest gay men for lewd conduct. But upon meeting Andrew (Tovey), it is Lucas who is arrested by the palpable sexual tension between him and his target.
Plainclothes, which is expected to have a wide release later this year, just had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. To give fans a taste of what's to come, the movie's official Instagram account shared a titillating clip of Blyth and Tovey engaging in some casual bathroom cruising with each other.
The first set of reviews for Plainclothes have been very positive, such as high praise from IndieWire's Ryan Lattanzio noting that Lucas is "the most emotionally (and physically) naked performance yet from rising British star Tom Blyth."
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Tovey discussed the many closeted men he's gotten to play throughout his career, recalling that he also struggled to accept his sexuality when he was young. "That feeling was so visceral and overwhelming as a kid, that there's something in exorcising it when I'm playing these roles," he said.
The cast of Plainclothes also includes actors like Christian Cooke (Ron), Amy Forsyth (Emily), Maria Dizzia (Marie), John Bedford Lloyd (Lt. Sollars), Gabe Fazio (Uncle Paul), and Sam Asa Brownstein (Christian).
