Pretty much at any point following his reality TV stint as the host of The Apprentice, many major pop culture figures have not been on Donald Trump's side. In fact, many artists have been fighting against the presidential candidate's bigotry for years, and things get particularly awkward when the Trump campaign decides to play music from an artist who is fully against him.
From current pop stars to music legends to progressive bands and groups, the soundtrack of Trump's campaign is limited to a very narrow selection of musicians. On the flip side, mainstream stars have publicly unauthorized Trump from playing their music — and many of them are even dragging the Trump campaign if they dare play a single song of theirs.
Keep scrolling to check out the full list of artists who denied Donald Trump and his campaign from using their music during his presidential runs.
Céline Dion not only unauthorized the Trump campaign from using her timeless anthem "My Heart Will Go On," but she also made sure to drag him in the official statement shared on Instagram. The post read:
"Today, Celine Dion's management team and her record label, Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc., became aware of the unauthorized usage of the video, recording, musical performance, and likeness of Celine Dion singing 'My Heart Will Go On' at a Donald Trump / JD Vance campaign rally in Montana. In no way is this use authorized, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use."
The statement concluded with one final, pitch-perfect jab: "…and really, THAT song?"
As reported by Billboard, Beyoncé sent Trump and his team a cease-and-desist letter over their use of "Freedom" in a campaign video. This was after Queen Bey had specifically cleared the song for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign to use. Trump's team subsequently deleted the video using "Freedom" — and THAT is how you put the MAGA folks on "mute"!
"Adele has not given permission for her music to be used for any political campaigning," a representative for the Grammy Award-winning singer said in response to Trump using her hit song "Rolling in the Deep" during Republican campaign rallies (via BBC).
Another cease-and-desist letter that reached the Trump team came from Bad Gal RiRi herself. According to Rolling Stone, Rihanna sent out this statement threatening to take legal action over Trump's use of her song "Don't Stop the Music" in 2018. One thing about Rihanna, she will NOT play games.
Sir Elton John started shutting down Trump's usage of his catalog since the first time he ran for president in 2016 — specifically naming "Tiny Dancer" and "Rocket Man" as songs that had been used by Trump's team back then, as reported by The New York Times.
It takes a village, people! Yes, even the Village People have come out against Trump using songs like "Y.M.C.A." and "Macho Man" in his campaign — as reported by Rolling Stone.
The Rolling Stones literally protested against Trump's use of their music, as noted by Billboard, citing that the band was ready to take "further steps" if his campaign continued using their music in any capacity. The specific tension point came after "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was used by Trump and his team.
Even the team from the late, great Sinéad O'Connor had to fight back Trump and his team for appropriating her iconic hit song "Nothing Compares 2 U" during the Republican candidate's rallies for the 2024 presidential election. Specifically, BBC News reported that the singer's estate issued a statement stating that it is "no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt, and insulted" by Trump using her music.
No Aerosmith allowed in a Trump rally, either! Rolling Stone reports that Steven Tyler threatened to take legal action against the Republican candidate if he continued to use Aerosmith's smash hit "Living' on the Edge."
The legendary group ABBA is one of the latest acts to join in on the movement against letting Trump get away with playing whatever songs he enjoys and wants to use to advance his political career. "ABBA have demanded that Donald Trump stop using their music after the former US president played several of their songs and used footage of the group at a campaign rally," The Guardian wrote in August 2024.
