35-year-old Stefanos Kasselakis is an entrepreneur and politician from Marousi, Greece. Over the years, he moved to the United States and earned himself bachelor’s degrees in finance and international relations from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2008, Kasselakis also served as a volunteer for Joe Biden as a presidential candidate in the Democratic Party primary elections.
When it comes to his professional achievements, Kasselakis worked for Goldman Sachs and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He then founded a shipping company called SwiftBulk, which was based in New York City but also had offices in Athens, Greece and London, the United Kingdom.
Kasselakis is an out gay man. He’s been in a relationship with Tyler McBeth, who is American, since 2019. Now that he’s working in politics, Kasselakis has been calling for same-sex marriage to become legal in Greece.
On Sunday, September 24, Kasselakis made headlines by being elected the president of Syriza, a left-wing political party in Greece. He defeated his opponent, Effie Achtsioglou, in a second round of voting with 56 percent of total votes.
As it stands, Syriza is the second-largest party in the Hellenic Parliament, with former chairman Alexis Tsipras serving as the Prime Minister of Greece between 2015 and 2019. Ultimately, this means that Kasselakis has a pretty good chance of becoming the Prime Minister of Greece now that he’s holding this position as president of Syriza.
