Ellen Page Tries Stand-Up, Discusses Freeheld on Conan, Will Name Your Pet for You
The one-and-only Ellen Page went on Conan last night to discuss her new film Freeheld, the story of Stacie Andree and Laurel Hester. The Nova Scotia native also re-debuted her old audition tape for Conan.
Made with her friend Steve Agee when she was 23, Page makes jokes about bees and Canadian money. They don't all exactly stick the landing. It's probably best that Page sticks to acting.
She also discussed how Freeheld's production mirrored her own coming out.
Conan mentioned that Page got involved with the project before coming out and asked the 28-year-old actress "Did you ever think you could make the movie without coming out?"
Page, who last year came out with an emotional speech at a Human Rights Campaign event and who just this past saturday was honored with the HRC's Vanguard Award for Commitment to LGBT equality, says she couldn't imagine playing Stacie Andree while still being in the closet.
"Yes, when it first came up I was 21; I quite closeted, and I will say the journey, if I may, of making the film did correlate and parallel with my own," she told Conan. "And it's people like Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree, who the film is about, who inspire you. They did something crucial and important and in a time of unimaginable difficulty. They inspire you to do the right thing, for yourself, to be a happier person, and to do the right thing for the community, to be a visible person for the community. I feel grateful to be a part of their story and, no, I can't imagine being closeted and playing this character."
Finally, Page will demonstrates her pet/plant naming abilities and basically proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that she's the coolest lady on the block.
