Emma Stone has been confirmed to play Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes, according to Variety, having recently closed a deal with Fox Searchlight. She joins Steve Carell who is set to play Bobby Riggs.
Directed by Little Miss Sunshine filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the sports drama centers on the well-known match in 1973 in which the 29-year-old King beat the retired Wimbledon champion, Riggs.
Although Stone has been in talks to play the role, schedule conflicts earlier in the year posed an issue. Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight was preparing to give the role to Brie Larson until Stone's schedule opened up. Brie will now star in Lionsgate's The Glass Castle.
Battle of the Sexes is just one of three, count 'em THREE, films in production about the match between King and Briggs. Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti will star in HBO and Playtone's version, titled Proof, and Will Ferrell is playing Riggs in Chernin Entertainment and Gary Sanchez's Matchmaker.
