Sumner eschews labels, except ‘musician.’
In a revealing interview with England's Evening Standard, Eliot Sumner, who has followed in her father's footsteps and become a singer-songwriter, opened up about her sexuality and gender identity.
When the ES asked if she'd ever come out to her family and friends, she said she had not because no one had ever asked.
"They knew already," the 25-year-old musician explained. "So I didn't need to. I've never come out to anyone. My friends always knew, and I always knew."
The third of Sting and Trudie Styler's four children, Eliot--whose second album, titled Information, is due out next month--revealed that she's been dating Austrian model Lucie Von Alten for two years.
Eliot doesn't identify as any gender and only identifies as a musician. "I don't believe in any specifications," she explained.
"I think forever I was trying to figure out maybe ... what I am. But I don't think anyone should feel pressured to have any kind of label or tag on them. We should treat everybody the same. Me, I don't like to be put down to a specific thing. We're all human beings."
Eliot says her sexuality used to give her troubles in the past. "Sexuality, to the way I looked, to who I was, where I come from...'"
Stay tuned: She has more than just her sophomore album to look forward to next month, around that time she'll be unveiled as the face of a major international fashion brand--but can't reveal which one at the moment.
