James Franco: 'I’m Gay in My Art and Straight in My Life'
Ahh...The curious case of James Franco. What are we to make of him? Despite identifying as straight, Franco's put a great deal of energy in to gay-themed projects like Interior. Leather Bar and The Broken Tower (and producing the documentary Kink.)
So where does this leave one of the most polarizing figures in entertainment? An enthusiastic fan off all things leather and rainbow-colored or a poser who wants the cool edginess of being gay--well what's left of it--without the, ya know, sleeping with men and dealing with discrimination?
Perhaps the answer lies in the pages of the March issue of Four Two Nine. Editor-in-chief Kevin Sessums had Franco tackle the question in a peculiar way: having straight James Franco interview gay James Franco.
Here's what we got:
Straight James: Let's get substantial: Are you fucking gay or what?
Gay James: Well, I like to think that I'm gay in my art and straight in my life. Although, I'm also gay in my life up to the point of intercourse, and then you could say I'm straight. So I guess it depends on how you define gay. If it means whom you have sex with, I guess I'm straight. In the twenties and thirties, they used to define homosexuality by how you acted and not by whom you slept with. Sailors would fuck guys all the time, but as long as they behaved in masculine ways, they weren't considered gay.
So...That's where we're at.
