Kung Jin is a new character to the Mortal Kombat world, and he has quite the backstory. After thieving, he became a monk archer and member of a Special Forces Unit. However, a series of flashbacks in Mortal Kombat X, which was released on April 14, reveals something far more personal: he's gay, albeit closeted.
When told by the character Raiden that he should join the Shaolin monks, Kung Jin responds:
"I can't... They won't accept."
Raiden's response, in turn, is:
"They care only of what is in your heart, not whom your heart desires."
While the issue of his sexuality doesn't seem to be developed further as of yet, the games cinematic director, Dominic Ciancialo, took to Twitter to respond to user comments:
"I see people are picking up on the subtle exposition contained in Kung Jin's flashback. Glad we have observant fans!"
